In somewhat surprising and subsequently amazing news, Marvel announced this week that they will have a five-issue Darth Maul comic series, set in the period leading up to the events of The Phantom Menace dropping in early 2017. Here’s the official synopsis from Marvel:
The comic finds Maul an untested warrior under the training of Darth Sidious, who would later become the Galactic Emperor. Told to stand down from engaging with Jedi yet, Maul hunts down the worst of the worst in the cosmic underworld to vent his frustration.
After learning a young Jedi Padawan named Eldra Kaitis has fallen into the hands of a crime lord, Maul seizes an opportunity to test his skills against a real Jedi but also maybe turn someone else to the dark side.
How do I feel about this? Fucking amazing, that’s how! There has been a silent undercurrent from the Star Wars hierarchy of bloggers, YouTubers, and webmasters that Disney was trying to at minimum put the Prequel era on the back burner, and at most bury them. Well, the Darth Maul comic series announcement is welcome news for sure, and has the potential to delve into a little-explored period in the new canon of Star Wars history.
What do I hope for? Well, an amazing comic series featuring the most criminally underutilized Sith Lord of all time – Darth Maul. However, if you dig deeper this series could shed at least some light on a few mysteries that have yet to be explored. What could those be? Well for starters the backstory of the Sith training that Maul went through under the tutelage of Darth Sidious. What else? Well….. we can HOPE that we finally get at least a glimpse of the elusive (at least in the new canon) Darth Plagueis. As much as I would love to see this, I would imagine Disney and Lucasfilm just might be holding this card for exploration in a later tale. We shall see. Either way, this is something every Star Wars fan should be excited about, I know I am!
The first issue drops in February, 2017, and check your local comic shop for undated info as we get closer.
