It’s been a little slow on the novel front lately, so I apologize for the lack of updates on our Canon Reading Guide. Having said that, it seemed like Timothy Zahn’s second foray into the new Star Wars canon, Thrawn: Alliances, deserves to be placed in the guide, so that’s what I’ve done. Although I went back-and-forth on whether to put Alliances in the ESSENTIALS or EXPANDING YOUR UNIVERSE categories, and ultimately went with ESSENTIALS. While I think the original Thrawn novel is superior and certainly more consistent, I felt that the fact that Alliances covers both the Clone Wars and Rebellion eras, with Thrawn bouncing back and forth between his time with Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader, and that makes it more vital to the ongoing world building and canon in the modern era. The inclusions of Padme Amidala and Rukh were nice touches, and I like what the author did with the First Legion, Vader’s personal cadre of Stormtroopers.
